Through the Looking Glass
Through the Looking Glass is a psychological horror starring Jonathan Rhodes and Paul McCarthy. It was shot in one of the most haunted houses in the UK - Compton House in Dorset. The film was real labour of love for Writer/Director Craig Griffith whose debut this is. The former commercials director wanted to pay homage to his favourite horror films and create a story to unsettle audiences.
Extensive ADR: Initially Timesquared Audio was hired to provide ADR [dialogue replacement] services. With the very small cast involved it was relatively easy to arrange sessions. Lists were made of which lines were priority but in practise we decided that consistency would be better achieved by recording coverage of whole scenes if there was any doubt about the quality of the location recordings. Craig was meticulous about performance during the ADR essions, and we vetted every single new line to picture to ensure that the overall performance was as powerful as it could be. Some of the best lines needed to be fitted better for lip sync and this was done with a combination of editing by hand and use of a piece of software called vocalign.
Music requirements for 'Through the Looking Glass' were mostly of the atonal variety. Cliff Harris and Craig (a musician himself) had already done a lot of work on some textural music that mirrored the journey of the main character, a conceptual artist. We worked with Craig to flesh out the soundtrack and to give it a coherence with the sound design of the film. Referencing everything from Texas Chainsaw Massacre through The Ring and the work of David Lynch we spent a lot of time talking about that middle ground that exists between sound design and music. The music on the end credits is a collage of about 15 bits of music. One cue is influenced by Georges Ligetti and comprises the vocal talents of Susie Sanderson singing 20 multi-tracks of atonal material. She also sings the only really tonal music cue near the end of the film.
